Small Manageable Goals
Sun 15 Apr 2007
I’m sitting here on my laptop watching thousands of people go by on the 23rd Annual Vancouver Sun Run. It is an annual event where over 50,000 people walk or run a 2.5km or 10km course. The past few weeks I’ve heard several people say I’m not ready for the Sun Run yet so I’m not going to do it. I’m watching the majority of participants go by and they are walking rather than running and it hits me. Yes, you could have done it whether you ran or walked but you would have completed the event.
Many of us put limits on what we can achieve!
Start off with a goal, if you think that the goal is not currently achievable then modify it into baby steps that are within your reach. You may not run right away but at least you’ll be moving towards your ultimate goal. Remember the old saying, “Walk first, then Run!”

Very true, Ted. I NEVER thought I would be able to run a 10km run in my life (let alone enjoy it). Because I wanted to run the Sun Run though, I set it as a goal and was able to run 10km (stop/start style) in October for the first time. Since October, I’ve run variable lengths each week (only going to 10km two other times) and knew that I could always walk if I had to. I was able to run the whole race non-stop and I came in 22,382 out of the 54000+ people, which I’m very happy about; it’s about progress, not about perfection!
Thanks to you and Warren for believing in me even when I couldn’t!

Congrats! It has all come from you… that committment deep, down inside of you! So, what’s the next running goal?

Topher was a little bemused when I came home from the Sun Run pre-race event with a fist full of brochures on other local runs. He says I’ll have gone too far when I start organizing our holidays around runs, which I felt was quite funny because I had actually thought to myself, “gee, I wonder if there’s a run in Ontario when we go there.” Haha. I hope to run one or two more organized 10km runs this year, but am otherwise unsure.
